What Do The Authorities
Have To Say About Fluoridation?
|
|
|
|
The majority of
dental and medical professionals continue to support fluoridation;
however, as reported in Scientific American magazine (January, 2008),
"scientific attitudes toward fluoridation may be starting to shift."
Professor John Doull, who recently served as the chairman of the
presitigious National Research Council report on fluoride toxicology
stated, "in the scientific
community, people tend to think this is settled. I mean, when the U.S.
Surgeon General comes out and says this is one of the 10 greatest
achievements of the 20th century, that’s a hard hurdle to get
over. But when we looked at the studies that have been done, we
found that many of these [toxicology] questions are unsettled and we
have much less
information than we should."
The links below provide a sampling of some of the concerns of public
health professionals and fluoride researchers who believe it may be
time to take a second look at fluoridation.

In 2007, over 600 Dentists, Doctors,
and PhD's called on Congress to stop water fluoridation until
Congressional hearings can be conducted (by January 2008, the number
had grown to over 1,200). They cited new scientific evidence that
fluoridation is ineffective in preventing cavities and has serious
health risks.

In 2006, Dr. Hardy Limeback, the
Head of Preventive Dentistry at the University of Toronto, who served
on the prestigious U.S. National Research Council committee that spent
over 3 years evaluating the latest science on fluoride toxicology,
issued a statement in which he explained the scientific reasons against
fluoridation.

In 2005, 11 employee unions of the
United States Environmental Protection Agency, representing
over 7,000 environmental and public health professionals, joined
together in calling for a nationwide moratorium on fluoridation,
primarily due to concerns that fluoridation causes cancer.
