1) What's Happening In Humboldt County With Regard To Fluoridation?

The Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District (HBMWD) is investigating the possibility of establishing a regional fluoridation system that would add the towns of McKinleyville, Blue Lake, Fieldbrook/Glendale, Cutten, and Manila to the communities that already fluoridate their water, such as Arcata and Eureka. 2) Should I Be Concerned About the Safety of Fluoridation?

Although fluoridation has long been considered safe for all members of the community, researchers are currently investigating new evidence that fluoridation may increase the risk of bone fracture, bone cancer, thyroid disruption, brain impairment, and other adverse health effects. More DETAILS

3) Does Fluoridation Reduce Tooth Decay?

Many scientists and dentists believe that an expansion of fluoridation in Humboldt County will bring a dramatic drop in cavities, because other communities that have chosen to fluoridate their water in the past have seen a dramatic drop in the rate of cavities afterwards. However recent studies have identified a similar drop in cavities in unfluoridated communities, and some communities that have stopped fluoridation have not seen a rise in cavities. As a result, a growing number of doctors, dentists, and university researchers now believe that other factors besides fluoridation, such as fluoridated toothpaste or better oral hygiene, may have been responsible for the declines in cavities seen in earlier studies, and not fluoridation. 4) What Do The Authorities Have To Say About Fluoridation?

The majority of dental and medical authorities support fluoridation, however the majority of scientists at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have asked for a suspension of fluoridation until more research is conducted on the health risks. A group of about 1,000 dentists, doctors, and PhD's have joined the EPA scientists in calling for a suspension of fluoridation. More DETAILS

5) How Are Other Communities Reacting To Fluoridation?

Most communities are continuing to fluoridate their water while scientists continue to study the risks, however a small number of cities have stopped fluoridation or have refused to start it. In some cases fluoridation is brought to a public vote, and historically fluoridation has lost about 50% of the time. More DETAILS
